The building is home to the Departments of German Literature, German Studies and Linguistics, and Northern European Studies. Its highlight is the Fritz Reuter Hall, named after a musical education professor who joined Humboldt-Universit?t from Halle/Wittenberg in 1955. Reuter was committed to ensuring that in renovating the building, the war-ravaged university would not only receive a new concert hall (the reconstruction was virtually planned around the historical room) but also approve the construction of a new organ. The organ celebrated its 50th birthday in 2009.

The building is also home to the libraries for Historical-Comparative Linguistics, Scandinavian Studies and German Studies Libraries.
