Excellence Initiative

<p><span style="" lang="EN-GB">This Cluster of Exellence pursues the
aim of investigating the systematic interrelationship between spatial
entities and systems of knowledge in the civilizations of the ancient
Near East and the Mediterranean region from the time of the early high
cultures up to the late stages of Antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
The Cluster provides the frame within which the interdependence of
space and knowledge is to be explored in a setting which includes the
reconstruction of ancient landscapes by archaeologists and earth
scientists, the organization of spaces in a historical perspective and
the way it is described in images and texts as well as the scientific
construction of spaces in ancient philosophy and mathematics. The
research proposal, made jointly by Freie Universit?t Berlin and
Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin is the product of close cooperation of
all Berlin research institutions concerned with ancient civilizations.
Contributions are made by reseachers working at the following
institutions: the “Alte Welt” (Ancient World) Interdisciplinary Centre
of the Freie Universit?t Berlin (IZAW), the August Boeckh Centre of
Antiquity of Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, the Berlin-Brandenburg
Academy of Sciences an Humanities (BBAW), the Deutsche Arch?ologische
Institut (German Archaeological Institut) (DAI), the Fachhochschule für
Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin (FHTW – University of Applied Sciences),
the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPI), the Federal
Museums of Berlin – Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SMB-SPK),
the Berlin State Library – Prussian Cultural Heritage (SB-PK) and the
Technische Universit?t Berlin.</span></p>
