HU Geographer member of the US-Landsat Science Team
Patrick Hostert, since 2006 head of the Geomatics Lab, Geography Department of Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, has been selected as a member of the US Landsat Science Team. Together with Biogeographer Tobias Kümmerle and Dirk Pflugmacher, an expert in satellite remote sensing and carbon cycle research, (both Geography Department, HU) he will be a scientific advisor for the current Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) of NASA and USGS.
"It is the first time a German team works so closely with one of the most important earth observation missions of NASA. That is mainly the result of our scientific work with Landsat data but also our established contacts to upcoming German satellite missions such as EnMAP and missions of ESA", says Patrick Hostert.
The Landsat Program started in 1972; its origin goes back to the time of the Apollo moon landings in the sixties, when first pictures of the Earth’s surface were taken from space.
The last of the seven Landsat satellites was launched to Earth’s orbit in 1999. In 2008, the planning for Landsat 8 (Landsat Data Continuity Mission) began.
The Landsat mission provides crucial information about the surface of our planet.
Urban growth, agricultural expanse, the status of coral reefs or rainforest – the high resolution images of the NASA satellites help scientists like Hostert to analyze the changes of the Earth’s surface and to develop scenarios for the future.
This information is especially valuable in times of global climate change, increasing environmental damages, and also considering that soon global population will exceed 10 billion people – a trend accompanied by an increasing shortage of resources.
