Happy Natives
Greig Coetzee's Happy Natives provides a poignant display of the complexity of post-Apartheid South African society. First staged in 2002, Happy Natives follows the question of a South African post-Apartheid identity, displaying the complex issues surrounding the quest for an individual identity in a country which desperately tries to live up to the promise of the 'Rainbow Nation'. Coetzee relies on the reproduction and subsequent deconstruction of common stereotypes in a bid to unmask and ridicule the often one-sided perceptions of identities predominant in the South African society. Written about ten years after the end of Apartheid, the play is still as relevant as it was in 2002 (text by Lea Artmeyer).
