Why study Islamic Theology at HU?
The Bachelor's degree programme in Islamic Religious Studies is designed to train religious education teachers for integrated secondary schools and grammar schools in Berlin. The subject aims to impart a broad and integrated knowledge and understanding of the academic foundations of Islamic theology, with particular emphasis on a comparative perspective. In addition, a critical understanding of the most important sources, theories and methods of the subject as well as the ability to deepen knowledge vertically, horizontally and laterally and to work out and further develop problem solutions and arguments in professional application are taught, as well as systemic and communicative competences.
Content and objectives of studies
The specific teaching content of Islamic theology as a science includes the disciplines of Islamic textual studies (Quran and Hadith), Islamic law, Islamic religious practice, religious education, Islamic philosophy, Kalām and mysticism, Islamic history and contemporary Islam. Another important pillar of the degree programme is language training in Arabic; practical language skills are also taught. In addition, special emphasis is placed on teaching content relating to the social role of Islam in the globalised world. This includes questions of interreligiosity, comparative theology and the plurality of Islamic currents and Muslim realities in Germany and Europe.
In addition to subject-specific skills, students are also taught professional skills that qualify them for the teacher training Master's degree programme, in which they are trained as religious education teachers.
A Muslim confession is a prerequisite for the teaching profession "Islamic Religious Education" at schools.
