Mathematics can be studied as:
Core subject with teaching training binding: 113 CP, with a second subject to be selected except from Special Needs Education
Second subject with teaching training option: 67 CP, with any bachelor’s core subject except Biology and Physics
Second subject without teaching training option: 60 CP, with any bachelor’s core subject except Biology and
*One credit point (CP) equals a workload of 25 - 30 hours for preparation, follow-up and attendance at classes.
Course objectives
Studying Mathematics and Didactics of Mathematics is intended to prepare students for their subsequent career as vocational lecturers or teachers of Mathematics in the subject-specific and didactic field. The bachelor’s degree creates the prerequisites for a master’s programme which, if passed successfully, authorises the student enrol in the Induction Service for prospective teachers. The training objectives are influenced by the intended educational and developmental outcomes at the school level, in particular the task of imparting subject-specific knowledge that boosts pupils’ critical and independent thinking and social competence.
Over the course of the training programme, students will acquire the foundations of firm and broadly applicable mathematical knowledge and skills, as well as the ability to think and work scientifically. This includes familiarising themselves with the approaches to thinking and working that are typical of Mathematics. This puts students in a position to take due account of subject-specific and many didactic fundamentals in planning, structuring and analysing Mathematics lessons. Students are encouraged to further develop skills such as abstraction ability, exact working methods and expression, creativity, independent work with specialised literature and communication and cooperation capability.

The Department of Mathematics at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin has an excellent reputation both in Germany and abroad, and offers a high-quality Mathematics programme. Specialised classes for the combined bachelor’s course meet the needs of future Mathematics teachers. The interconnection of subject- specific and didactic teaching is worth particular mention. This is expressed in modules such as Elementary Geometry and its Didactics, Algebra/Number Theory and its Didactics as well as Stochastics and its Didactics. The Department also has partnerships with Berlin secondary schools and is organises a range of activities for supporting mathematically-gifted schoolchildren. Partnerships enable teachers to be seconded to the teacher training programme of the Department of Mathematics, which gives the course a highly practical dimension.
