State treaty between the Holy See and the State of Berlin creates a binding basis

On 29 September, the Apostolic Nuncio, H.E.Msgr. Dr Nikola Eterovi?, and the Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, signed the State Treaty between the Holy See and the State of Berlin on the Institute of Catholic Theology at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (HU). The state treaty regulates cooperation in the field of university-based Catholic theology and contains agreements on the Institute of Catholic Theology (IKT) at the HU.

"With today's signing, a new chapter in the history of our university has been given a binding foundation. The Institute of Catholic Theology will make its contribution to academic excellence and social dialogue," said the President of the HU, Prof. Dr. Julia von Blumenthal, on the occasion of the signing.

Prof. Dr. Georg Essen, Director of the ICT: "The Institute of Catholic Theology has established itself as an innovative centre of theological research with a special focus on theological anthropology. The unique religious plurality offers the Institute optimal conditions for interdisciplinary, interdenominational and interreligious research work as well as for dialogue between theology and society."

The Institute for Catholic Theology

The Institute of Catholic Theology (IKT) began teaching and research at Humboldt-Universit?t in the 2019/20 winter semester. The degree programme is designed to qualify students for positions in the teaching profession, in extracurricular educational work, in religious organisations, in associations, in the media and in academia. It is based on a modern concept that takes into account the social and religious plurality in Berlin. The city is included in the programme as a secular and multi-religious space. The ICT is in close dialogue with the Faculty of Theology (Protestant Theology) and the Berlin Institute for Islamic Theology (BIT) at the HU as well as Jewish Theology at the University of Potsdam. The four theological institutions cooperate in the interdisciplinary centre "Center for Interreligious Theology and Religious Studies" (CITRS). The research centre aims to develop an interreligious networked theology and religious studies that meets the requirements and potentials of multi-religious societies

Research and teaching at the IKT

The IKT offers the subject "Catholic Theology" in various Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. In addition to a subject-specific degree programme, students can choose teacher training courses for teaching at integrated secondary schools and grammar schools as well as primary schools. A Bachelor's degree programme in "Religion and Society" and a doctoral programme leading to a doctorate in the humanities (Dr. phil.) are being planned.

The IKT currently has five professorships: Biblical Theology, Historical Theology, Systematic Theology, Theological Ethics and Practical Theology. The "Nikolaus Cusanus Chair for the Theology of Religions", which is financed by third-party funds, deals with the dialogue between religions. The Institute's research is bundled in the interdisciplinary programme "Theological Anthropology in Plurality". It addresses current issues at the interface between theology, society and culture.
