The problem of the difference between the two versions of the Transcendental Deduction in the Critique of Pure Reason is classic. In particular, it is not clear whether the second edition, by giving centrality to judgment, extends the reach of a discursive synthesis to the detriment of the synthesis of imagination. The difficulty increases because, throughout the Transcendental Analytics, the first Critique presents different formulations on the role of synthesis in general, which are not immediately compatible with each other. Our central proposal is to investigate the scope of the activity of the imagination in the two editions of the Transcendental Deduction in the CRP: whether its function is reduced or even replaced in the second edition by an intellectual synthesis.
