Interdisciplinary research structures

Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (HU) has established Integrative Research Institutes and Interdisciplinary Centres to promote, generate and sometimes establish research ideas that transcend disciplinary boundaries and disciplines.

Integrative Research Institutes (IRI)

The Integrative Research Institutes are designed as cross-faculty institutes that offer outstanding academics the opportunity to work on and further develop a field of research together on an interdisciplinary basis. In this way, the IRIs specifically promote strong research collaborations within the university and make a decisive contribution to raising the profile of the university as a whole. IRIs generally run for 12 years over three funding periods (5+4+3 years).

Interdisciplinary centres (IZ)

Interdisciplinary centres are temporary research facilities of the HU, usually lasting up to ten years. They enable excellent, interdisciplinary research and are intended to recognise and implement potential areas of the university's profile. IZ are designed as experimental formats in order to be transferred to another structural form of the HU or to be terminated after successful fulfilment of the objectives and at the latest after expiry of the maximum funding period.
