Excellence strategy

The Berlin University Alliance was successful in the 2019 Excellence Strategy competition and is receiving funding from the federal-state program. Four Berlin universities are cooperating to gain new insights and find solutions to pressing problems: Freie Universit?t Berlin, Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, Technische Universit?t Berlin, and Charité – Universit?tsmedizin Berlin.

Berlin University Alliance: Excellence in a network

The Berlin University Alliance is Germany's first and only Consortium of Excellence, funded by the German Research Foundation. Together with Freie Universit?t Berlin, Technische Universit?t Berlin and Charité - Universit?tsmedizin, Humboldt-Universit?t pursues the vision of being the core and driving force of Berlin as a leading centre of knowledge and innovation in Europe.

Cluster of Excellence

The principle of cooperation is indispensable in science, as big questions can only be solved in teams and across disciplines. Clusters of excellence, large collaborative research projects funded by the federal and state governments, are an example of this. Scientists are working to solve the major social challenges of our time.

The federal and state governments' "Excellence Strategy" aims to strengthen Germany as a centre of science and research and its international competitiveness in the long term.

Second round of the competition

On 22 May 2025, the Excellence Commission decided that an additional place in the Universities of Excellence funding line can be filled for the 2027-2033 funding period.
