Description

In Berlin, there is a unique university collection of significant cultural value: the production archive of the Ernst Busch University of Theatre Arts (HfS). The HfS production archive documents not only the history of an outstanding institution of learning in its artistic and socio-political contexts but that of its unique city theater: the Berlin Workers' and Students' Theatre (bat). Furthermore, the archive documents decisive moments in the artistic and cultural history of Berlin, the GDR, and today's Federal Republic. Important and unknown sections of German theater history can be reconstructed and made accessible to public through the production archive. The HfS has set itself the task of making the production archive, which has not yet been designated for use, accessible to the public for research, teaching, and practice. Together with the Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, the Akademie der Künste, museum-digital, and a strong network of suitable institutions, the collection will be upgraded by indexing and digitizing exemplary parts of the collection and by an extensive transfer of archival and museum knowledge and experience to the HfS. The collection will gain visibility in the existing research infrastructure, in particular in theater and literary studies, and the HfS's ability to cooperate will be increased. An artistic-performative program accompanying mobile exhibitions will promote dialogue between the HfS, its network partners, and the wider public. An accompanying research project will throw new light on the training of actors and directors in the GDR and on the bat as a setting for literary, performative, and cultural-political debates, demonstrating the suitability of the university collection for research purposes. Furthermore, the potential of the collection for teaching purposes as well as for artistic works and artistic research projects will be explored. The result will be a utilization concept for the production archive.
