HU Sports Institute receives Silver "Star of Sport" for innovative fundraising campaign

HU and SC Tegeler Forst raise money for cancer research with long jump campaign.

The Department of Sports Didactics at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (HU) and SC Tegeler Forst e.V. received the Silver "Star of Sport" at state level for their project "Your Jump for Cancer Research". The award is presented annually by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken for social commitment by sports clubs and is regarded as one of the "Oscars of popular sport".

As part of an HU seminar, students developed and realised an idea for a fundraising campaign together with the association. The principle of the campaign was simple and effective: the focus was not on top athletic performance, but on the number of jumps: for every long jump completed, SC Tegeler Forst and other partners donated one euro to cancer research. This resulted in a total of 7,137 jumps and just as many euros in donations. The money will benefit two research areas at the Charité in Berlin: CAR-T cell research in paediatric oncology (Prof. Dr Annette Künkele-Langer) and research into familial breast and ovarian cancer (Prof. Dr Dorothee Speiser). The two scientists provided insights into their work during the event and supported the initiative by jumping in themselves. "We are delighted to have been honoured with the Star of Sport. The project shows what we stand for: Science, social commitment and team spirit," explains Prof Dr Katja Schmitt, Head of the Department of Sports Didactics at HU. "Our students have not only gained insights into event management, but have also built an emotional bridge between donors, those affected and research."
