Humboldt-Universit?t project on trauma pedagogy dovetails school practice and science

The educational research and transfer project "FluKoS+" (flight, trauma and development in the context of schools), led by Prof Dr David Zimmermann and Dr Josef Hofman from Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (HU), is developing innovative approaches to support refugee children and young people with special needs. The recently approved three-year project is being funded with almost 600,000 euros from the EU's Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and will create sustainable structures for inclusive work in schools.

Apply now: Qualification programme for educational professionals from Berlin and Brandenburg

"FluKoS+" offers an evidence-based qualification programme for 360 educational professionals from Berlin and Brandenburg at the HU, for which teachers can still apply. It includes basic trauma pedagogy training, specialised in-depth modules on the intersection of trauma and the school support focuses of emotional-social development, intellectual development, hearing and communication, as well as seminars on case understanding and heterogeneity sensitivity. 80 of the participants also receive professional support through continuous supervision and systematic networking.

Accompanying research on the effectiveness of trauma education interventions in schools

The accompanying scientific research comprises 48 systematic lesson observations and 120 pupil surveys. This empirical data basis enables well-founded statements to be made about the effectiveness of trauma education interventions in the school context. In addition, 36 multipliers are being trained to act as ambassadors for the developed concepts and ensure their sustainable implementation.

A unique feature of "FluKoS+" is the systematic interlinking of further education, empirical longitudinal research and school development. The project is based at Humboldt-Universit?t's Centre of Excellence for Rehabilitation Sciences (KoRa), which enables this integrative approach and the direct transfer of educational innovations into school practice.

Systematic dovetailing of further training, school development and accompanying research

Building on the findings of the successful predecessor project "FluKoS" (2019 to 2021), "FluKoS+" pursues a dual sustainability strategy: on the one hand, the project presents evidence-based training concepts and recommendations for action for school practice, and on the other hand, it ensures systematic feedback of scientific findings into the school development processes of the participating institutions.

The scientific support ensures the empirical validation of all developed measures for the specialist community. "FluKoS+" focuses on the professional support of refugee children with complex support needs and makes an important contribution to inclusive school development and the integration of vulnerable target groups through the close connection between scientific research and practical dissemination.
