Press release by the State Conference of Rectors and Presidents of Berlin Universities (LKRP)

This was preceded by more than six months of intensive negotiations. An amendment agreement for the current university contracts has been on the table since the end of July. The State Secretary for Science had asked the presidencies of all eleven state universities for feedback by 22 August as to whether they could recommend the amendment agreement to their committees as a future basis for cooperation. This draft is now still undergoing departmental coordination in the Senate and requires the approval of the Berlin House of Representatives. Only then can the amendment agreement be signed by the universities.

Following the reduction of 142 million euros in 2025, the amendment agreement provides for increases again for the years 2026 to 2028, which, however, fall far short of the binding annual funding increase of five per cent agreed in the original agreement.

Julia von Blumenthal, Chairwoman of the LKRP and President of Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin: "The university presidia were faced with a difficult decision. The amendment agreement gives us planning security, but we are facing serious cuts in teaching and research. Now it is important that the Senate and the House of Representatives prove to be reliable. The new contract must be implemented as it is now on the table. Changes would only be acceptable if they were in favour of the universities."
