Prof Dr Claudia Mareis becomes Research Commissioner at Humboldt-Universit?t

The new Executive Board Representative will represent the office of the Vice President for Research until a new appointment is made.

The Presidential Board of Humboldt-Universit?t (HU) has appointed Prof. Dr Claudia Mareis as its Executive Board Representative as of 1 October 2025. Claudia Mareis, Professor of Design and History of Knowledge at HU and co-spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence "Matters of Activity. Image Space Material", will deputise for the Vice President for Research as a representative of the Presidential Board while the position is vacant.

The current Vice President for Research, Prof. Dr Christoph Schneider, will step down from his position on 1 October 2025 and move to the University of Hohenheim as Rector. The election process for his successor has already been initiated. According to the timetable for the election process, a new appointment is expected for the winter semester 2026/27.

About the person

Claudia Mareis has been teaching and researching at the HU's Institute of Cultural Studies since April 2021. Until then, she was Professor of Design Theory and Research at the FHNW Academy of Art and Design in Basel. Since 2019, she has also been co-spokesperson of the interdisciplinary Cluster of Excellence "Matters of Activity. Image Space Material" of the HU. With her work over the past two decades, she has made a significant contribution to establishing design research in German-speaking countries. Through her previous leadership and committee activities, she brings with her a profound expertise in interdisciplinary and strategic research contexts.
