Dissertationspreis Adlershof for 2023 goes to Dr. Lisa Kr?ll

The psychologist researched how active predictions shape our vision.

On 13 February 2024, the Dissertationspreis Adlershof was awarded for the 22nd time in a row. Dr Lisa Kr?ll received the 3,000 euro prize, which is jointly donated and organised annually by the IGAFA e. V. research network, Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin and WISTA Management GmbH. As part of her doctorate at the Department of Psychology at Humboldt-Universit?t, she researched how active predictions shape our vision.

In order to view important parts of our environment with high visual acuity, we constantly move our eyes from place to place. But how can we perceive interesting objects as stable even though they are constantly shifting on the retina of the eye? In her doctoral thesis, Dr Lisa Kr?ll showed that human vision does not function like a camera that is passively directed at relevant stimuli. Quite the opposite: our perception is characterised by active predictions that allow us to look into the future for a brief moment before each eye movement.

In addition to Dr Lisa Kr?ll, two other outstanding researchers presented their research in the final round: Dr Andrei Bud had investigated the geometric classification problem for different parameter spaces of surfaces in his doctoral thesis at the Department of Mathematics at Humboldt-Universit?t. Dr Niklas Grabicki's doctoral thesis dealt with the synthesis of functional molecules that can be classified as new molecular sensors or light-responsive magnets. Both received prize money of 1,000 euros for their nomination.

About the award

Since 2002, Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin, WISTA Management GmbH and IGAFA have annually awarded the Adlershof Doctoral Thesis Prize, which honours young researchers for outstanding scientific achievements in the context of a doctoral thesis completed at Adlershof. Doctoral theses that have been completed in the past 18 months with a grade of at least "very good" (magna cum laude) are considered. Three nominees will present the topic of their work in short, generally understandable presentations, which will then be assessed and honoured according to research and presentation achievements. Participants receive a prize of 1,000 euros for their nomination and 3,000 euros for the best dissertation.
