Description
Subproject: "Mathematical modelling and efficient computational mathematics for simulation of tool grinding". The practice in mechanical engineering of the tool grinding is based on macroscopical experimental models. A detailed empiric investigation on a microscopic scale of the abrasive grains is pending basically. For example, it is not clear, to what extent this dividing process is a transformation process with a fatigue fracture or a brittle fracture with crack formation. On the microscopic scale of the abrasive grains the elastoplastic contact problems will be joint numerically with fracture mechanical failure mechanisms. Principal purposes are a consistent mathematical modelling and their reliable and efficient numerical simulation with adaptive finite element methods to predict the macroscopical reaction forces. An error control in the discretization process is of fundamental importance to analyse the modelling errors.
