Description
The 9th International Symposium on Ancient Chinese Grammar unites established and young scientists from the East and from the West and it supports and promotes their collaboration in the important field of the linguistic research on Classical Chinese Grammar. In the upcoming Symposium, the syntax and the semantics of pre-modern Chinese are focused on from a diachronic and a synchronic perspective; new approaches in the analysis of the syntax and the semantics, but also the morphology and historical phonology of Chinese will be discussed. Due to the encounter of different theoretical frameworks, represented by the participants of the conference, new insights into the synchronic structure of the different stages of pre-modern Chinese and its diachronic development are expected. These will be of particular relevance also for studies in general linguistics which are frequently based on obsolete and imprecise hypotheses with regard to the Classical Chinese language and its diachronic development. Based on a combination of studies on the semantics and the syntax of Chinese and its morphological processes universal and particular typological patterns of Chinese will be revealed. The regularly held symposia on Ancient Chinese Grammar constitute an invaluable contribution to the research on the history of the Chinese language, one of the languages with the longest continuous written tradition in the world, but also a language, the mechanisms and regularities of which have not yet been revealed entirely.
