Starting on 29 October, renowned academics from the social and cultural sciences will shed light on current research, discuss diagnoses of society and explore theoretical approaches to better understand our present. Matters of Activity: Material Agency and Interdisciplinary Knowledge

This lecture series is dedicated to the diverse interdisciplinary research of the Cluster of Excellence "Matters of Activity". The research network, which has been based at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin since 2019, sheds light on the modes of action of materials from an active perspective. This fundamentally changes the established understanding of materials as passive, ahistorical substances. Materials are therefore not dead substances, but a living part of our living world. They connect human and non-human actors, different times and places and carry their own dynamics as well as an implicit memory.

When: From 22 October 2025, Wednesdays, 10-12 am

Where: HU main building, Unter den Linden 6, lecture theatre 3075

Lecture series Medea

Medea is one of the most colourful female figures of antiquity. The lecture series Medea opens up new perspectives on this exciting character. The focus will initially be on the ancient texts by Euripides, Ovid and Seneca as well as the Roman fragments that have come down to us. Then the figure of Medea will be examined from a broader, interdisciplinary perspective, for example from the perspective of archaeology and ancient religious studies. Finally, a look will be taken at the reception of the Medea figure in modern times, in contemporary theatre and in the works of Anna Seghers and Christa Wolf.

The lecture series takes place every two weeks and is organised in cooperation with the Berlin Collection of Classical Antiquities. It was organised with the kind support of the Berliner Antike-Kolleg and the Centre for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin.
