Research-based learning

The basic idea of research-based learning is a self-determined, research-orientated course of study. Students are introduced to research as early as their Bachelor's degree, learn to formulate scientific questions and develop a research design. Various projects from the Quality Pact for Teaching have developed resources for research-based learning, which we have compiled for you.

Research-based learning is characterised above other forms of learning by the fact that learners (co-)design, experience and reflect on the process of a research project aimed at gaining knowledge that is also of interest to third parties in its essential phases - from the development of questions and hypotheses to the selection and implementation of methods to the examination and presentation of the results in independent work or in active collaboration in an overarching project.

The project

The aim of research-based learning is to introduce students to university research and a research-based way of thinking from the Bachelor's degree programme onwards. Students learn to formulate scientific questions, develop an appropriate research design and apply this in a methodologically sound manner. Ideally, they will go through all phases of a research process up to the publication and reflection of their results.

The bologna.lab has produced various articles on research-based learning and guidelines for lecturers, which are designed as a guide to integrating research-based learning into seminars.

Other projects from the Teaching Quality Pact (2012 to 2022) have also developed resources on research-based learning, which we have collected for you here.
