Sustainability

Human-induced climate change is noticeable to all of us, and it is more important than ever that we take action. Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin also wants to contribute to a sustainable society.

Why is sustainability important to us?

As a scientific organisation, we are concerned about the course of the climate crisis. The consequences of man-made climate change have demonstrably negative effects in various areas of society. We want to counteract this development and set a positive example of how we can become climate-neutral through science and commitment.

Players at HU

  1. Sustainability Office

The student initiative Sustainability Office at Humboldt-Universit?t is consistently committed to a sustainable university. Above all, the students have set themselves the task of stimulating and coordinating innovation in the areas of teaching, research, governance, operations and communication in order to advance the transformation of HU into a sustainable university.

  2. Fridays for Future

The Fridays for Future and Scientists for Future movements also gave new impetus to HU's activities to realise a climate-neutral university.

  3. Thematic class "Sustainability & Global Justice"

In the themed class, students research questions of sustainability in interdisciplinary teams. At the interface of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, the scholarship holders work on a joint research project and are supervised by scientists from the Integrative Research Institutes on Transformations of Human-Environment Systems (IRI THESys).

  4. Sustainable University Commission

In December 2019, the Humboldt-Universit?t University Senate set up the Sustainable University Commission (KNU). Its task is to develop a sustainability strategy for the university and initiate appropriate measures for implementation.

  5. Climate protection management

The Climate Protection Management team has been in place since May 2021. The Climate Protection Management team has drawn up an integrated climate protection concept, which was published in February 2023. The aim is for HU to become climate-neutral by 2030.

Our goal: climate-neutral by 2030

Humboldt-Universit?t aims to be climate-neutral by 2030. This ambitious goal was set by the University Senate in October 2021 following input from students and the Sustainable University Commission. We have developed a concept to achieve this goal.

Climate protection concept (in German)

The concept takes a holistic approach: from technical optimisation and structural anchoring to participation, monitoring and awareness-raising - with the aim of making the university sustainable and climate-friendly by 2030.
